Fighting Fires with Education

They fight fires with education.  What do you do?

When Nat and Margie Howell sought to connect with their community they looked down their own street to The Stony Point Volunteer Fire Department. Nat and Margie’s interest in their local volunteer fire department, coupled with their interest in education, resulted in yearly financial support for a University of Virginia student volunteer.

The belief that a firehouse is a gathering place, much like a school, energized the couple to invest $1,000 a year to subsidize a student volunteer’s expenses to be a part of their community. The Howell’s Crofton Hill Scholarship Fund means the firehouse now has another valuable volunteer and the community has another educated citizen. CACF worked with the Howells to establish this unique program and to ensure it would be there in perpetuity.
